Description

Beautifully done bronze statue of Grape Harvest, with grapes in basket and in hand. Sculpture stands 8-inches tall perfect for desk top or book shelf. Stand is approximately 2-3/4 inches square and 3/4 inch thick, and made of back marble with white marbling throughout. Weighs approximately 1 pound. Provenance: This statue was from the estate of Horatio Seymour Rubens, the late turn-of-the-century attorney that drew up the Liberation papers for the junta in 1895-98 for the Spanish American War after being contacted by Jose Marti about the tobacco workers in Key West that went on strike and were ousted by their employers. He was successful in representing them, which led to being named as Consulting General Attorney of the Cuban Revolutionary Junta in 1895. Mr. Rubens lived in a beautiful estate directly across the Hudson River from West Point in New York. His maternal uncle was the Governor of New York, Horatio Seymour who ran on the Democratic ticket (and lost) in the presidential election of 1868 against Republican, Ulysses S. Grant. More can be found on Mr. Rubens affairs with the Cuban Revolution at: https://www.ipscuba.net/english-version/spaces/padura-en/horatio-rubens-before-and-after/ He was also good friends with Teddy Roosevelt and assisted Mr. Roosevelt in obtaining arms for the Battle of San Juan Hill. Mr. Ruben's only-child daughter was a family friend of the seller's own family. This very statue was a part of Mr. Rubens personal estate and was a fixture in his residential study.
